South Central CT doesn't have a ton of "mountains" but we make up for it with our traprock ridges. Some of them are quite steep. Some of them go straight down the sides of these "mountains".

We decided to put a series of five races on to see who has the toughest quadriceps muscles in New England. Here's the schedule of events:

Race #1 - Saturday, April 4th, 2020: Castle Craig, Meriden. Dropping a sharp 512 feet in just over a mile (1.1ish) your quads and lungs will be burning in this early Spring fitness test- it's a straight shot to the bottom, so strap yourself in and feel the G's, baby. This is the site of many a runner's mile PR.

Race #2 - Saturday, April 11th, 2020: Judges' Cave, West Rock Ridge SP, New Haven. Just about a mile in length, this down hill is not as steep as the first race and has a few twists and turns. Drops about 138 feet. This one favors the kickers, if you go out too hard you'll watch folks fly by you like you're wearing a parachute.

Race #3 - Saturday, April 25th, 2020: Roaring Brook, Cheshire. The only "trail" race of the series and boy is it a doozy. A sketchy and mildly technical start over dirt and roots that eventually funnels you onto a narrow, paved path- position is key for this race. Exactly one kilometer in length and a stout 405 feet of descent.

Race #4 - Saturday, May 2nd, 2020: Old English Drive, East Rock Park, New Haven. A mile and a third, this is the only race that actually has a slight bit of climbing in it as well. Another race that favors the kickers; don't let the name fool you- this Old English also has the potential for you to be retching curbside at the finish line. Only 144 feet of drop here, but they hurt just as bad.

The Championship

Race #5 - Sunday, May 17th, 2020: The Tower Trail, Sleeping Giant SP, Hamden. 1.5 miles of quad crushing pain awaits each finisher as they descend 577 feet along the famous Tower Trail. If your lungs don't explode on the way down your knees might- there's twists and turns and hikers and off-leash dogs and hungover college kids and all kinds of ridiculous shit to contend with here.

How it Works...

You pay one fee and it covers all five races.

You must run all five races to be considered for the Championship. If you miss a race, tough cookies. Seriously if you miss a race I'll send you cookies but they will be tough to eat.

The races work like golf- lowest combined times win.

One overall female and one overall male winner.

Swag from Ragged Cuts and Live Loud.
